Annex The Violet Wars Rich Larson Books

This novel has brisk pacing and both protagonists are well-rounded and memorable. Most of the supporting cast isn't as memorable except for one late addition further into the story, but if they get further explored in the sequel, then I'll forgive it. I'm psyched for more adventures with Bo and Violet.

Annex The Violet Wars Rich Larson Books Reviews

It wasn't marketed as such, but this is really "young adult" fiction. The protagonists are all 10-15 years old, the adults are mind-controlled zombies, and the setting is a totally generic post-apocalyptic dystopia. Still worse, this is marketed as science fiction, but all of the science and technology elements are hugely unsatisfying -- basically nonexistent. In fact, they seem like magic and wish-fulfillment.

I didn't get very far before I put it down for good.

I don't know if it's a good book or a bad book; I didn't come close to finishing it, hence the three-star "neutral" review. What I do know, and can state emphatically with total confidence, is that it's not science fiction for adults.

...So it's just not my cup of tea, I'm afraid.
Disclaimer I received a copy for review.

Precocious abused children save the world with the help of alien tech implanted in their bodies by the aliens who want to destroy the world.
I read this book in a day and a half. It's hard to put down; and it's hard to put down because it's compelling. The book is about a group of surviving kids running around during an alien invasion, and these types of books always guarantee lots of fast-pacing, action-packed fun, yet it's easily clear how much the author focuses on character emphasis. They really are the blood of the book and what he wants you fixated on among all the scenes that would look great on the big screen, and it's what gives the book depth and leaves me very excited to see what the next two have to offer. Highly recommended. I read a lot of books and have little patience for cardboard character layouts, lazy dialogue, and sloppy writing. You'll find only the best in here, the stuff that compels you to return to it again and again. Enjoy )
I found out about Rich Larson from the Clarkesworld Podcast. I'd heard a couple of his short stories and loved his world building and storytelling. I was excited when I found out a piece that was played on the podcast was part of a new book. I immediately went to get it and read it. I finished this in a few days and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Aliens invade Earth and start taking children for reasons that will be revealed in the book. Adults are "clamped" and wander around like zombies unable to interact with any of the children. A few escape the warehouses they were in and come together to form "The Lost Boys" under the leadership of an older boy named Wyatt. Our protagonist is a young boy named Bo and a girl named Violet.
You do have that YA feel with all the kids being under 15 (since everyone over that age was clamped), but I'd still encourage a read just for the quick story. It's really fun.
There are a lot of suspended disbelief moments in the book, especially towards the end, but it's a fun read, as far as I see it's not touting itself as hard Sci-Fi, which is my favorite to read.
The bottom line is this, if you can't get past the age of the protagonist and surrounding characters don't read it. For me the age of the children only added to the struggle they had to get through, as well it was necessary to have that childlike belief and gullibility for some of the events to happen the way they did. For those interested there is a transexual girl in the story that struggles with her past life in her home (where her parents wanted a mans man type of boy) but now with her parents clamped she's able to take hormone pills that she scrounges up at the pharmacies and try to become who she feels like, although there are no surgeons to help her totally realize who she is inside she struggles with this in the story as well.
This is a part one of two (maybe three I'm not sure) duology or trilogy, but you could read this book as a standalone and be fine. It doensn't necessarily end on a cliff hanger, there is room for more growth, but the book closes the loop nicely while leaving some up to the imagination. I'm curious to see what happened after the events and see where the author takes us after the invasion piece is completed so I'll definitely be picking up the next book.
The book was full of twists and turns, it was so incredibly easy to get lost in. I gasped a few times and literally threw my phone away (I read it in the app) after some lines. I may be biased as a trans woman myself but the way Violet is written and expressed made me feel so connected to her. I don’t feel that quite often with other characters. Like her and Gloom, I find myself often feeling lonely. I can’t wait to read the next book!
This novel has brisk pacing and both protagonists are well-rounded and memorable.
