Loretta Chase is one of the top writers in this genre. Can anyone ever forget her all time best (IMO) Lord of Scoundrels? I've also enjoyed the Dressmaker Series and many other books by this talented author. In "Don't Tempt Me," we have a somewhat original type of storyline - in that our heroine, Zoe Lexham, was kidnapped in a foreign country while traveling with her parents when she was 12 years old and has recently returned to England after escaping the harem where she had lived for 12 years. What makes things even more interesting is that although she was married off straight away, to the pasha's youngest son, he was sickly so she's still a virgin - albeit a virgin who has been well versed in all things sexual. Additionally, she's been gone so long and accustomed to conversation tendered with sexual connotations, there are some truly funny parts, especially when she talks frankly about how "she's been trained to pleasure a man," and the names she has for certain body parts such as a man’s “instrument of pleasure” when she attempts to explain why she’s still a virgin.
Because of her “harem girl” past, family members are up in the air about how fast they’re all going to come crashing down in Society with the exception of her father, Lord Lexham, who searched for Zoe for years and years and is just thrilled to have her back. To Lord Lexham's credit, he's a good man who years previously took two young orphan lordlings in hand following the death of their parents - Gerard and Lucian - heir and spare to the dukedom of Marchmont. Gerard passed away leaving Lucian to carry the burdens of the Marchmont dukedom along with the heaviness in his soul of having lost those in his life that he most valued, including his childhood friend, Zoe.
However, if there's one person in his life that he truly values, it is Lord Lexham. Therefore, when word that the "harem girl" has been restored to her family with the accompanying gossip, Lucian decides he will take it upon himself to bring her back into good standing with Society, all for Lord Lexham's sake. There's never any doubt that he will be able to do exactly what he sets out to do. However, Lucian's plans do not include opening up his heart to anyone ever again – including Zoe. But, we know that his plans to protect his heart will come crashing down and the fun is getting to come alongside Lucian and Zoe as she very quickly not only affects his "membrum virile" but also slowly penetrates his heart. A very fun love story.

This story features a surprisingly poignant relationship between Zoe and Lucien. It was so much more than a romance! Ms Chase made me change my mind about Lucien as the book progressed, from a shallow, predictable dandy to a wounded, deep thinking, affectionate, compassionate hero! Zoe's character was adorable and honest and witty and without all of the silly misunderstandings and manipulations. I would have given it a 5 star but the backstory of Zoe's rescuer was sketchy at best, it seemed odd that that character was not explored. I love the ending as well as the fact that the story continues beyond the usual point.
It pains me to give a Loretta Chase book less than 5 stars. I read this right after reading Last Nights Scandal. I hardly knew where one ended and the other started. The characters were very similar in personality. I was bored with their lack of restraint. It was too predictable. I devoured Chase's earlier books. This one is just just up to the earlier novels.
I thought I could get past of the white slave narrative. I was wrong. Being a sex slave just makes her sensual. A story about evil Muslims who kidnapped a 12 year old girl and sold her as a sex slave. Yet she comes back with no PTSD. It’s racist and not original. I knew I wouldn’t like it. But then a kissing scene contains the heroine trying to break away from a kiss and the hero not stopping. There is nothing good or original in this book.
There are loads of reviews and summaries already so I'm just going to say a few things. If I hadn't known that this was the author's work, I wouldn't have believed it. It was lovely, light and fantastical but I enjoyed every chapter. It's escapism at it's best with just enough Regency to be pleasing. I laughed out loud a number of times too. I really recommend this book
I liked the hero and heroine. No real conflict with Zoe and Lucien to speak of. Zoe has an interesting background being kidnapped at age12; and, the story could have had some excitement regarding her past. But instead, the story just took the easy way out for the HEA and proceeded with the bland romance formula.
Thoroughly enjoyed and would read again. I wished there were more stories included about Zoe and Marchmont as children so we were more convinced of how close they felt as children. There were a few towards the end of the book, but I would have preferred them in the beginning. I liked both characters and Marchmont's evolution back to a generous, caring person is heartwarming. Deducting 1/2 star for some minor fluidity issues - the story seemed to sputter along at some points and missed the consistent driving forward feeling of Lord of Scoundrels.
Delightful. That's the only way to describe this book. The hero, Duke of Marchmont, and the heroine, Zoe, were friends since childhood. The heroine is kidnapped in Cairo at the age of 12 and groomed and trained to please a man and to be one of the wives to the Sultan's son. She is not really familiar with the strict English customs upon her rescue and return to England, which results in awkward and funny situations. Loretta Chase is a wonderful writer. It's great to see how the H & h reconnect and the Hero learns to live and love again after giving up. It's a beautiful romance. Really enjoyed it.
