The `Chocolate Girls' describes the lives of three young ladies and their family and friends starting in July 1939 to November 1954. It is a tale of love and hardship, but most of all - their friendship. It takes place mainly during the war years in Birmingham, England. They work at the Cadbury factory and the tale of Britain at war slowly surrounds them with its' terror, love and death. It's an interesting book and quite long at 518 pages.
Many of the hardships of war are described in the novel, but in many ways the worst of the privations of day to day living are glossed over; instead the focus is on the soap opera of the lives of the 3 girls. It is a shock to have the book jump from September 1944 to November 1954; but the story is carried through. It is certainly a surprise to have it end in Israel, but that does add a final appeal to the reading. Many will find this book a interesting one to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the wartime dramas of Edie, Ruby and Janet. Everyone seemed so real. Details of the time and the effects of war on England were "spot on". Excellent job of keeping the reader interested. Quite the relaxing and entertaining read. Wish it was easier getting hold of copies of her other books which I'd like to try after enjoying this one so much.
Wish I could make this a 6*. Three young women Edie, Ruby and Janet growing up in England during the Blitz in World War II. They all worked at Cadbury Bournville factory. Edie is the main character. And then there is the little baby David....but if you remember Emma Hart from Woman of Substance, Francis, Janet's mom is another woman I will never forget, a Quaker with a beautiful heart.
Chocolate making is central to the setting as Cadbury's chocolate makers in Bourneville, Birmingham, is where three girls meet and chat as they lead busy lives around their jobs. The factory was run by Quakers who established a village of good housing, a green space around their site and continued education for the young people who came to work with them. Other mentions include free art classes and trips, and a cocoa van sent around during the WW II bombing to sustain workers and bombed out citizens. The firm was not entirely enlightened as a girl had to leave when she married. Supposedly this was because her husband should support her but in fact we see that the women all had to pick up other work which was less pleasant.

The girls from various classes are first met as the war is looming and each fall for unsuitable men so their lives are not easy. The book contains several descriptions of pregnancies, miscarriages and births so this tends to deter male readers. However the chapters about the war are well detailed with care as to the effects of the Blitz and the exhausting and emotionally draining, not to mention dangerous, volunteer work done by men and women. Cadbury's had to re-employ married women as the men were away, and the ration chocolate was an inferior variety, plus much of the factory was turned over to other work such as producing respirators (gas masks). We also get a good look at the lives of Quakers and Jewish people at this time and into the 1950s.

One of the girls adopts a war orphan and the story of this child continues to link the families after the war. The author has written other Birmingham sagas and while this one is not particularly romantic, she does a good job of portraying the people and times.
I was completely absorbed in the story. i was born in London in 1941 so much brought back memories of that time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book because I come from the area that the book is about so for me it was quite nostagic, a bit predictable but a good light read.
This was an enjoyable read with characters that I came to understand through the author's rich descriptions. The background of history during World War 2 added context to the story line. I would recommend this book.
Edie, Ruby and Janet all work at the Cadbury factory in Birmingham Engalnd. Right before the war breaks out the girls are each faced with a life changing event. Edie is getting married, Ruby is afraid of getting left behind and Janet finds herself having a baby. But the war does come and Edie finds her taking in a child that is an victim of airraid. The war ends, and the three women find themshelves going in different directions but the boy with no past, will bring changes to all of thier llive.

"Chocolate Girls" is the first book by Annie Murray that I have read and while I did find it an okay read, I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the time jumps that the writer used, overall it was an okay war-time read.
